Sustainability has emerged during the past two decades as a key issue having an impact on Architectural and Urban setting in both the developed and developing countries and communities on the education,  research and professional practice fronts. This is manifested in recent changed and ongoing transformations in the approaches to architectural and urban design, building sciences and construction methods, environmental control and conservation processes, urban planning and management. It is also reflected in the architectural and urban features of existing and newly developed settings and the related physical and cultural contexts. The objective of the first conference and scientific forum of the Department of Architectural at the Faculty of Engineering – Cairo University, is to address the notion, process and practice of sustainability in Architectural and Urban Development through the investigation of three key topics, namely: Sustainable Development in Architectural and Urban Design; Sustainability in Building Sciences, (Construction Methods and Environmental Studies); Sustainable Physical Planning and Management. Research papers and discourses are to review, analyze, monitor and evaluate the various aspects of sustainability in  development, to enable the formulation of plans of actions and propositions for appropriate  practice.
